Art in the age of mechanical reproduction
INFLIGHT ARI
237 Elizabeth St, North Hobart
Saturday 28 November - Friday 19 December
Opening: 6pm – 8pm, Friday 27 November
Artist's talk: 4pm Saturday 28 November
Art in the age of mechanical reproduction sees a solitary photocopier installed in a white cube gallery with a photograph placed under its hood. The photograph can only be seen when a viewer presses the 'copy' button on the machine. On the final day of the exhibition this photo and the negative from which it has been taken will be shredded, leaving only the reproductions. This exhibition plays with the relationship between, artist, artwork and viewer through a democratisation of the art-making process. By making a gift of the work the artist questions our understanding of authenticity, provenance and the authority of the work of art.
